❝Diversity and Inclusion isn't just the right thing to do. It is a strategic advantage; it makes an organization stronger, innovative, resilient, and ultimately better-performing.❞ —Coach BZ
Bob Fabien "BZ" Zinga argues that the #technology sector must mirror the nation’s#diversity, drawing on America’s motto “E Pluribus Unum”, because a workforce rich in varied backgrounds, talents, and perspectives drives organizational resilience and peak #performance; #inclusion then ensures every individual, especially #women and underrepresented #minorities, feels #respected and #valued, transcending mere legal #compliance.
Despite high-profile pledges by #SiliconValley firms in 2014 to boost workforce #diversity, meaningful improvements in hiring and retaining #minority professionals remain elusive, underscoring the need for proactive #leadership at every level.
Drawing on the US Navy’s Command Managed Equal Opportunity (#CMEO) program, Zinga offers four core recommendations for #tech organizations:
☑ Check Unconscious Bias: Actively counteract affinity bias by using gender-neutral job descriptions and anonymizing applications (stripping names and personal data) so hiring decisions focus solely on qualifications, thereby expanding the candidate pool beyond homogenous networks.
☑ Designate a D&I Senior Leader Outside HR: Appoint a full-time diversity and inclusion leader—separate from Human Resources—with clear accountability and formal training to influence strategy and resource allocation.
☑ Review and Update D&I Policies Annually: Task the D&I leader with maintaining governance documents—policies, procedures, training—and require all employees to acknowledge them yearly; enforce a zero-tolerance stance on discrimination, with swift, proportionate consequences for violations.
☑ Conduct an Annual Climate Assessment: Implement anonymous surveys to capture employees’ perceptions of inclusion, equal opportunity, and organizational culture; ensure senior leadership responds to feedback, fosters non-retribution, and keeps the dialogue open to sustain continuous improvement.
By institutionalizing #unbiased hiring, dedicate #leadership, rigorous #policy governance, and regular #climate assessments—modeled on military best practices—#cybersecurity and #tech organizations can not only elevate their #DEI efforts but also turn them into a strategic #competitiveadvantage.

🚨 Ready to Break into Cybersecurity?
Cybersecurity isn’t just a job—it’s a #mission. Whether you’re an enlisted sailor eyeing your next chapter or a security engineer hoping to lead a team, the path to becoming a cybersecurity professional is both accessible and meaningful—if you pursue it with #purpose.
In my Forbes article, “My Expert Advice On Becoming A Cybersecurity Professional” (https://lnkd.in/ebVivUCR) I shared a few timeless lessons from my journey that can help you build a thriving career in this high-demand field. Here are a few highlights:
🔐 1. Start with Why—Then Get Certified
Don’t chase cybersecurity because it’s trending. Pursue it because you’re passionate about protecting systems, people, and data. Once you’ve clarified your “why,” pursue foundational certifications like Security+, CISSP, or CEH to validate your expertise and open doors.
💡 Coaching Prompt: What’s your deeper motivation for pursuing cybersecurity—status, salary, or service?
🎯 2. Be Mission-Focused, Not Title-Focused
In both military and tech environments, the best leaders aren’t obsessed with rank—they’re obsessed with results. The same goes for cyber. Start anywhere. Learn everything. Execute with excellence. Every SOC analyst and junior engineer who thinks like a CISO will eventually become one.
💡 Pro Tip: Titles follow impact. Build trust through delivery, not ego.
🌐 3. Network Like It’s a Strategic Operation
Cybersecurity is a team sport. No one succeeds alone. From LinkedIn engagement to mentorship groups and DEFCON meetups, build relationships intentionally. Military folks—treat networking like intel gathering. Engineers—treat it like building your GitHub for people.

🧠 4. Stay Curious. Stay Humble. Stay Relevant.
Cyber is a fast-moving battlefield. Complacency is the enemy. I encourage my mentees to read industry blogs, listen to cybersecurity podcasts, and follow thought leaders on LinkedIn. Make continuous learning part of your routine like you would PT or code reviews.

🎖 5. Lead with Integrity. Always.
Whether in uniform or in a hoodie, the best cybersecurity professionals hold the line with character. This field gives us extraordinary access to systems and trust. Use it wisely. The greatest credential you carry is your integrity—not your resume.
🛡 Core Value Reminder: Integrity is doing what’s right when no one is looking—especially in cybersecurity.
🚀 Final Word: Cybersecurity Needs You
We need more defenders from diverse backgrounds—those who think critically, act decisively, and lead with humility.

BIO: Neferteri Strickland is a Cybertechnology Strategist, podcast host, military officer and adjunct professor who aligns with her communities through emerging technology initiatives in K-20 Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) education.
She has a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communications from Savannah State University, Master of Professional Studies in Information Assurance and Cybersecurity from The Pennsylvania State University, and industry certifications as a Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH), Project Management Professional (PMP), Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP), and a certificate in Higher Education Teaching from Harvard University's Derek Bok Center.
As a Communications Officer in the Pennsylvania Army National Guard, Neferteri directs the integration of fire support assets for combined arms operations at the battalion and brigade levels.
At the start of the 2020 COVID-19 Pandemic Neferteri launched TEACHERS & the Design to Disrupt community to support education stakeholders navigating the future of education.
She, her loving husband, and two amazing children, reside in the Greater Philadelphia Region where she serves as an adjunct professor in Blockchain Technology at Saint Joseph’s University and a lecturer at The Wharton School of Business.
